Richmond 2015 Welcomes Brompton Folding Bike Event to World Championships

First Brompton World Championship Event to Take Place on UCI Course; Competition Celebrates 10 Years of Global Competition, Bike Friendliness of U.S. Cities

RICHMOND, September 2, 2015 – The UCI Road World Championships, which come to the United States this September for the first time in a generation, will be even more of a spectacle thanks to the addition of one of the most unusual bicycle events in the world. Closing the first week of UCI racing on September 25, 2015, 150 nattily dressed Brompton folding bike riders from around the country will compete in the USA leg of the Brompton World Championship series.

Hosted by Brompton, the iconic folding bike manufacturer from London, the Brompton World Championship series is part sporting-event, part sartorial spectacle. Contestants wear suit jackets along with shirts and ties and run, Le Mans style, to folded Bromptons. The fastest man and woman to unfold their bicycle and race the one-lap, 10-mile circuit of the UCI “Worlds” road circuit will take winners titles and receive return flights from Brompton to attend the final in London, 2016.

The U.S. portion of the Brompton World Championship series is in its sixth year.

“This is definitely the year to take the national event to the next level,” said Katharine Horsman, General Manager of Brompton, Inc. “American cities have invested heavily and successfully in the kinds of infrastructure and support to make urban cycling really boom in the past few years. Brompton, a bike designed for city life, has become a big part of that trend, and we’re seeing sales climb in bike markets all over the U.S. We’re thrilled to stage our event on such an inspiring platform and in the heart of such a great American city, and of course we are really eager to see exactly what U.S. Bromptoneers can do on this amazing UCI course.”

Added Tim Miller, COO of Richmond 2015, the organizing committee of the 2015 UCI Road World Championships: “We’re excited to welcome Brompton to the World Championships and know each competitor not only will relish the opportunity to race for a championship, but also race on the same course the world’s best women and men will compete on for rainbow jerseys.”

Rules for the Brompton World Championship USA are simple. Contestants dress in suit jackets and ties and all Lycra must be hidden. They then run Le Mans style to their folded Brompton bikes and unfold them before speeding off round one lap of the UCI Road World Championships course in Richmond, Va. The race starts 6:45 p.m. on Friday, September 25 and is expected to last one hour with the first entrants completing a circuit in as little as 25 minutes. The best-dressed man and woman each will receive special limited-edition Brompton Game Bags made by legendary British luggage maker John Chapman. Runners up in the overall race receive two nights paid accommodation courtesy of Small Luxury Hotels with third finishers taking home Ortlieb “O” bags. Iconic saddle maker Brooks also is sponsoring the much-contested team event.

Brompton racing began with The Brompton World Championship, first held in 2006, established by Brompton’s Spanish distributor; 2008 saw the event migrate to the UK. In  2010, qualifier events were introduced in, Japan, the Czech Republic and the USA, amongst others. The champion from each of these national events went on to compete at the World Championship in London.

Designed by Brompton inventor Andrew Ritchie in the 1970s and refined for more than 40 years, the Brompton folding bicycle is a design icon and has won accolades around the world. Still meticulously made in London and exported to 48 countries around the world, the Brompton is made for cities. Folding to a third its size and weighing between 20 and 28 pounds depending on customization, each Brompton stows neatly under office desks, barstools in bars and restaurants and helps people move easily from A to B. They store easily in the trunks of cabs and cars and are bus and train friendly.

“The Brompton World Championship is a fun event, of course,” Horsman said. “But it also has an important message. American cities are more bike friendly than ever, and with the right kind of bike designed for city life – a Brompton – people can enjoy a new and incredible kind of independence that can help them save money on public transport, have fun and also keep them fit as a bonus.”

Bromptons are available at independent bike stores across the United States, which can be found online at www.brompton.com.

The UCI Road World Championships will take place in the United States for the first time since 1986. The event is expected to attract 450,000 on-site spectators from the Richmond region and around the world over nine days of racing and more than 1,000 top cyclists from nearly 70 countries around the world. Last year’s Worlds took place in Ponferrada, Spain.

Brompton is the official folding bike sponsor of the UCI Road World Championships, Richmond, 2015. For more information about the Brompton World Championship USA, visit www.brompton.com/bwcusa.
