Partner Profile: Altria

Altria and its companies have had deep roots in Richmond for almost a century. Over time, we’ve learned that investing in our communities provides great places for our employees to live and work and helps attract top talent.  But investing in our communities means more than writing a check. That’s why we encourage employees to volunteer their time and talents in addition to financial support.

Serving as a founding partner of the Road World Championships, Richmond 2015, is an important way for us to support Richmond and help showcase our city on a world stage.

Altria, a Fortune 200 company headquartered right here in Richmond, includes some of the most enduring names in American business like Philip Morris USA, manufacturer of Marlboro cigarettes; U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, manufacturer of Copenhagen and Skoal; John Middleton, manufacturer of Black & Mild cigars; Nu Mark, which makes MarkTen® e-vapor; and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, which makes Chateau Ste. MichelleMichelle, made by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, is the official sparkling wine of the races.

A closer look at how we invest in our communities

Our giving strategy and community involvement focuses on areas that drive our business forward and addresses societal expectations:

Supporting Youth Development

We support programs that are proven to help prepare kids academically, socially, emotionally and physically for a successful future. The specific programs and partners we support vary by local community, based on local capacity, need and opportunities for collaboration.

Protecting the Environment

We’re committed to reducing our companies’ environmental impact and promoting the sustainability of the natural resources on which we all depend. This includes supporting water quality and conservation, sustainable agriculture, and litter prevention and cleanup.

Arts & Culture

We’ve supported both the visual and performing arts for more than 50 years. We continue to champion arts & culture organizations that inspire and reflect the qualities we value in our business operations – creativity, diversity, excellence and innovation.

Other Sponsorship to Support Richmond 2015

In addition to our Richmond 2015 founding partner sponsorship, Altria provided a grant to support “Go Bike Art,” a program of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the City of Richmond to outfit the city with 30 new custom-designed bike racks. Altria also supported the Regional Ride Center, which seeks to rehabilitate and increase existing mountain bike trails within Central Virginia’s Pocahontas State Park and the James River Park System. The goal is to obtain International Mountain Bicycling Association classification.

Employees Volunteer Efforts

Altria companies’ employees volunteered hundreds of hours getting the city ready for the race. This summer, employees:

  • beautified parts of Richmond, like Brown’s Island, Bryan Park, the Canal Walk, Ancarrow’s Landing and Monroe Park;
  • worked on “Welcoming Walls,” an initiative to beautify gateways into Richmond by creating public art in areas that are highly visible as visitors enter our city; and
  • built bikes on Belle Isle, where the bikes will benefit James River Park Services to engage area youth in using and learning about Richmond’s bike trails and parks.

Because this is our hometown, our support of Richmond 2015 is more than just financial. It’s about all of Richmond coming together in different ways to support an international event that puts our city on the world stage. And for as long as we’ve proudly called Richmond home, we’ve made civic investments that strengthen the community we all share. Whether it’s through financial support or employees volunteering their time and talents, we’re committed to making Richmond a great place where we all can succeed.
